It is a very durable, long-lasting material that does not need to be replaced frequently making it ideal for the manufacture of underground pipes. Pipes made from PVC are less likely to burst in cold weather than alternative materials. The inherent chemical properties of the plastic means they are resistant to the corrosion and rust, factors that can cause leaks. Furthermore, PVC is impermeable to bacteria, helping to ensure that the water that reaches your home is clean and non-contaminated.

The versatility of PVC means that it is also well suited for many other applications. The material is a good insulator so it is often used for as sheaths for electrical cables. Many of your household and office items, including televisions, laptops, fridges and washing machines, use PVC cabling.

PVC is made chlorine and ethylene, a product of the petrochemical industry. The VinylPlus initiative is the European PVC industry’s new ten year Voluntary Commitment to Sustainable Development. It has been developed in an open process of stakeholder dialogue, including private companies, NGOs, regulators, civil society representatives and PVC users. The scope of the programme extends to the EU-27 plus Norway and Switzerland. Under the VinylPlus initiative, 362,076 tonnes of PVC have been recycled in 2012 in Europe. The aim is to recycle 800,000 tonnes by 2020.
