Kem One to receive funds to support electrolysis unit conversion
French member company Kem One will receive a €15 million subsidy to boost the energy efficiency of their chlor-alkali electrolysis units at Fos-sur-Mer in southern France. This is part of a wider €100 million investment at the site. The new units are expected to begin production in 2024.
This new development is expected to reduce electricity consumption by around 16% per year (leading to 50,000 T less CO2 emissions) as well as boosting the production of low-carbon hydrogen. This hydrogen can then be used by other industries on the Fos-sur-Mer site. Kem One is one of the largest low-carbon hydrogen producers in France.
The funds have been allocated as part of the French governments Relance Recovery plan that aims, post-Covid, to develop strategic industry sectors and encourage more sustainable activities. The conversion is also part of wider Kem One actions to reduce energy consumption by 30% and gas emissions by 50% by 2030 as a company, compared to 2013 levels.
