INOVYN confirms closure of last mercury cellroom in Runcorn

Further to the announcement in 2015 regarding the stopping of production from the last remaining mercury cellroom at Runcorn Site (“J Unit”), INOVYN recently confirmed that closure of this unit will now proceed.

This is as a result of the successful completion earlier this year of the extended reliability testing on the Membrane Chlorine Plant at Runcorn Site which will take over chlorine production at the site.

The closure is in line with a Euro Chlor membership-wide voluntary programme to cease all mercury-based chlorine production ahead of the international Minamata Convention programme and effectively meets EU requirements to cease all mercury chlorine production by the end of 2017. This work also follows the earlier closure of two mercury units at the site in 2006 and 2008 respectively.

Final closure is expected to be complete in early 2017 followed by full decontamination and decommissioning activities.
